Hello! I’m Victoria Schechter, a Brazilian writer currently based in the east of England. I write between languages and between places: I was born and raised on the coast of São Paulo, but in recent years my life and my work have also begun to unfold in English, in constant dialogue between different cultural landscapes.
Alongside research and literature, I am also an amateur singer — a talent that only my neighbours have the privilege (or misfortune) of knowing about. I love a long conversation with friends, whether in person or over a video call. The topics range from dense politics and philosophy to trivialities such as leaks in the hot water heater and small-town gossip, usually accompanied by a good cup of tea — a habit acquired, of course, since becoming an expatriate in this fascinating land where people apologise when you bump into them and a proper cupper (milk, please, no sugar) cures almost anything.
My passion for the art of storytelling guided me along a very winding but rich and diverse academic path, which ended up shaping the way I see the world and put words on the page. Each stage of this journey was fundamental in deepening my voice and my research.
Here I’ll tell you more about how I got to where I am today.
My BA degree in Literature fraom the University of São Paulo (USP), with a specialisation in Portuguese and English, was the starting point.
I completed two master’s degrees: an MFA in Creative Writing from the Instituto Vera Cruz in São Paulo, and an MA in Modern and Contemporary Literature from the University of East Anglia (UEA) in the UK.
I am currently in the final stages of my PhD in Creative-Critical Writing at UEA.
Patuá Publishing House, 2022
Prismas is my debut novel, published by Editora Patuá in 2022. The narrative delves into themes such as perception, identity, and the lived experience of disability. While not autobiographical, the book reflects aspects of the conversations and exchanges I’ve had throughout my life with people who are blind or have low vision — and a bit of my own experience as well.
I have also published short stories in literary magazines and anthologies. These works span a variety of genres and styles, ranging from playful humor to micro-short stories. In fact, it was with a micro-short story — a form I love — that I won third place in the New Writers Contest in 2018, earning a featured spot in a literary anthology. In the Authorial Texts section, you can find all of them.
If you identify with my work and are interested in inviting me to collaborate on future projects — such as consultancies, workshops, events, or creative partnerships — I would love to hear more.
If you would like to chat — whether to work with me, arrange a workshop or mentoring session, collaborate on a project, learn more about my research (or simply have a literary chat) — you can fill out the form next to this text and I will get in touch as soon as I can. Don’t forget to fill in the ‘email’ field! Without it, I won’t be able to reply to you.
